Rotorua’s response to Cyclone Gabrielle was to gift 100 getaways to people severely affected by this natural disaster.

In welcoming people to Rotorua, we are sharing the manaakitanga we are famous for – the gift of time, aroha and the chance to reconnect. We are excited to be sharing our place of healing with them.

This was a whole-community response led by Rotorua Trust and endorsed by Mayor Tania Tapsell and RotoruaNZ. To make the biggest difference in the lives affected by Cyclone Gabrielle called for donations from all corners of Rotorua. The wider tourism and hospitality sector provided many of the activities and hospitality and most of the accommodation. Locals gave generously to our guests too.

The getaway packages were gifted by the awesome community groups in the affected areas and by nomination from friends and family. Nominations are now closed and we are in the process of connecting with recipients and organising their getaways.
